DAML Homework Assignment 3: Large-Scale DAML Content

Due: Thursday, 1 February 2001

This assignment is intended to gain experience with DAML+OIL, focus attention on creating instances (content) as well as ontologies, provide additional DAML content for subsequent experiments, and to get everyone thinking about large-scale conversion and/or dynamic generation of DAML content.

  1. Review the new DAML+OIL language specification
  2. Generate pages containing at least 10,000 DAML statements from a significant dataset of your own choosing. Hint: You probably don't want to do this by hand! You may want to convert an existing data set, crawl existing pages, provide a DAML front-end to an existing WWW site, and/or dynamically generate DAML content from an existing database. The statements you generate can either be "ontological" in nature (for example, by crawling an existing web taxonomy or thesaurus) or "instance oriented" (for example, scraping content from semi-structured documents or web pages).
  3. Register your content as a starting location for the DAML Crawler using http://www.daml.org/content/submit.html.
  4. If you created any new ontologies, add them to the DAML Ontology Library using http://www.daml.org/ontologies/submit.html.
  5. Create an HTML page listing your lessons learned. Include a description of the techniques and/or tools used to generate your content.
  6. Send the URL for your lessons learned page to webmaster@daml.org.
